(in memory of Mother Teresa)

all other angels
stationed in wet grass
inside the cow’s mouth,

skimming over low waves
in the fly shape pursued by a Black River salmon,

hanging on
by threads of spider webs
abandoned in wrecked hospital corners,

you were our most pursued angel
our most sought after
most dreamed of
most beloved
angel of all the forgotten,

of all those we passed without seeing
on their way into death,

never knowing
you were the last one in their lives,

the last
familiar buzzing in their ear,

the last
side-step out of their stumbling way,

as if it finally mattered
whether the angel you always were
was in the way
of their life
or not
